Hamilton finishes on top by 0.652 seconds over Vettel, whose Ferrari retired one hour into the session, confirming Ferrari’s reliability issues.
Hamilton led the way with the fastest time of the weekend so far – a 1m37.583s. Finishing ahead of Ferrari’s Sebastian Vettel and team mate Nico Rosberg.
The German’ session, however was cut short after he suffered an electronic problem with one hour left and after only 10 laps covered.
The morning’s pace-setter, Nico Rosberg, had to settle for third position this time around, nearly a full second behind Hamilton, whose session was not without drama after the reigning champion lost a set of tyres due to a spin.
Kimi Raikkonen in the second Ferrari and Daniel Ricciardo in the quickest Red Bull completed the top five.
Valtteri Bottas was the fastest Williams driver in sixth, ahead of local hero Daniil Kyat and the McLaren og Jenson Button.
The top ten was completed by Felipe Massa and Fernando Alonso.
With the track conditions continuing to improve, Vettel was quick to better his FP1 time, the Ferrari driver moving to the top of the times quickly with a 1m38.921s using soft tyres.
In his first run, Rosberg fell just 0.005 seconds short of his rival’s best, as Hamilton went off at Turn 7 and aborted his lap.
But the Briton rectifies the situation moments later, going quickest with a 1m38.311s that put him over six tenth clear of Vettel at that point.
Turn 7 claimed another victim at the 20-minute mark when Pascal Wherein spun his Manor, before Hamilton suffered a similar fate a few moments later, the Mercedes driver flat-spotting a set og soft tyres.
Vettel and Raikkonen were the first of the front-runners to switch to the supersoft tyres before the session reached the 30-minute mark.
Vettel jumped to first place, but by just 0.076 seconds, as Raikkonen had to settle for fourth after struggling with rear end grip.
But Vettel’s day came to an early finish with 59 minutes to go, the Ferrari driver stopping on the main straight and triggering a virtual safety car period.
“I lost all electronics” said Vettel over the radio.
Hamilton set the fastest time of the weekend – 1m37.583s – with 51 minutes to go after switching to the supersoft tyres.
Rosberg was unable to match his teammate’s pace before most drivers started to focus on ling runs, the German down in third.
The session ended with Wherein reporting a loss of power, having to park his Manor.
